A photograph more closely showing the upstream test position in its most typical configuration is shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/01\/upstream_area_b-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/01\/upstream_area_b-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/01\/upstream_area_b-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/01\/upstream_area_b-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/01\/upstream_area_b-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/01\/upstream_area_b-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/01\/upstream_area_b-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/01\/upstream_area_b-1568x1176.jpg 1568w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Experimental apparatuses are most commonly mounted to an optical <a href=\"https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/beamline\/translation-stages-and-breadboards\/#breadboards\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"99\">breadboard<\/a> can be positioned horizontally and vertically with the <a href=\"https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/beamline\/translation-stages-and-breadboards\/#vertical-stage\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"99\">translation stages<\/a> it&#8217;s sitting on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before reaching an experiment, particles first pass through the &#8220;QC1&#8221; ion chamber which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/beam\/monitoring-and-calibration\/#primary-monitor\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"83\">primary monitor<\/a> of real time beam flux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most setups, they then pass through the <a href=\"https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/beamline\/binary-filters\/#small-binary-filter\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"105\">small binary filter<\/a> which provides a configurable thickness of polyethylene to further slow down the particles if desired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/wpw.bnl.gov\/nsrl\/beamline\/collimators\/#adjustable-collimator\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"103\">adjustable tungsten collimator<\/a>\u2014which is used to further fine tune the beam&#8217;s shape\u2014is most often mounted downstream of the binary filter and just in front of the experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A photograph that highlights these components is shown below.
