Estimates of Expected Field Errors in RHIC Magnets

To help accelerator physicists, the following tables were developed by magnet division for making realistic estimates of field errors (no safety factors or margins) for RHIC magnets. These tables were continuously updated based on latest design, construction and test results, and record of the rational was kept. This was a major effort between accelerator physicists, magnet scientists and management, with regular meetings. To better represent the reality without added safety factors, a third column (“uncertainty in mean”) was introduced to the earlier convention of two columns (“mean” and “sigma”) only.

• 130 mm aperture insertion region quads (QRI, QRJ, QRK)
• 80 mm aperture main arc quadrupoles
• 100 mm aperture insertion region dipoles
• 180 mm aperture insertion region dipoles
• 80 mm aperture tuning quadrupoles
• 100 mm aperture helical dipoles
