HTS Solenoid for Axion Search at IBS

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was awarded the design and construction of a 25 T, 100 mm bore solenoid made with High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) for the Center for Axion and Precision Physics (CAPP) at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), Korea for the dark matter Axion search. This followed the successful completion of the first Phase of R&D, where BNL design, built and tested 8.6 T (10.8 T peak field), 6 pancake solenoid built with the 12 mm wide HTS tape from SuNAM with metallic Stainless Steel (SS) insulation. The 25 T design was based on the No Insulation (NI) technology using the 12 mm wide HTS tape from SuperPower. Even though the 25 T program was terminated mid-stream for non-technical reasons, a significant demonstration of the high field HTS magnet technology was made during the course of this R&D.
